Choosing cutting optimization software?

SmartCut, Ardis and Magi-Cut on delivery model, speed, proof, machine support and pricing — with every competitor claim quoted from their own published wording, dated. Both alternatives are mature, respected tools; here is where SmartCut differs, and where they may still be the right choice.

Head to head

Explore the layouts

Real jobs from the 11-job study, sent to all three tools with the same parts, the same stock, the same blade width and the same trim. Pick a job, switch between SmartCut, Magi-Cut and Ardis, and see what each one actually cut.

The SmartCut layouts here come from SmartCut Max — our deepest setting, not the everyday Fast one. Max keeps hunting for a better arrangement until its time is up, so it can land on a slightly different layout from one run to the next. What you see is the exact set of results captured for the published study, rather than something you would reproduce cut for cut.

For every one of these jobs there is a hard limit — a number of stock below which the parts simply will not fit. SmartCut lands on that limit all nine times. The job-by-job numbers and the full method are on the benchmarks page.

Ardis alternative

Looking for an Ardis alternative?

Ardis is a modular manufacturing suite — optimizer, planning, offcut warehouse and quoting sold as separate building blocks, installed and configured for your plant. That depth is real, and so is the project it takes to deploy it.

SmartCut takes the opposite approach: one cloud service that quotes, optimizes and writes the machine file, live, inside the systems you already have. There is no installation project — your ERP or website calls the API and gets layouts back in seconds. Pricing is published, a test environment is available on request, and our efficiency numbers are benchmarked in the open rather than quoted in a sales meeting.

  • Live in days — an API call, not a deployment project
  • Quotes in seconds at the counter, in the checkout and in your ERP
  • Cut-to-size e-commerce included, not a separate module
  • Published pricing and published benchmarks

Magi-Cut alternative

Looking for a Magi-Cut alternative?

Magi-Cut's engine has four decades behind it and pairs naturally with the Cut-Rite / Homag workflow. If you cut on Homag saws today, SmartCut fits the same slot: our PTX files are compatible with Magi-Cut, Cut-Rite and many Homag saws directly — plus native Biesse XML and Mayer output the desktop workflow doesn't cover.

The bigger difference is everything around the engine. SmartCut runs in the cloud — no Windows PC in the office doing the optimizing — so the same engine powers your website's instant quotes, your ERP's estimates and your saw's cutting lists. And the two engines are compared publicly: on nine real benchmarks with identical inputs, SmartCut Max matches or beats Magi-Cut on seven, with full methodology on the benchmarks page.

  • Same PTX workflow — plus Biesse, Mayer and more
  • Optimize from any device — nothing tied to one office PC
  • Instant online quoting your customers can use directly
  • Head-to-head results published, job by job

Fair play

When they're the right choice

We'd rather you pick the right tool than pick us for the wrong job. Ardis is a strong fit if you want one vendor running plant-wide planning, stock and MES alongside optimization, delivered as an installed, parameterized suite. Magi-Cut is a strong fit if you want a self-contained Windows package in an established Cut-Rite workflow and don't need online quoting or an API.

If what you need is the fastest optimization engine, machine-ready files, live quoting and a way to sell cut-to-size online — run SmartCut against your current tool on your own jobs and let the numbers decide.

FAQ

Comparison FAQ

Is SmartCut an alternative to Ardis?

For cutting optimization, quoting and machine files — yes. SmartCut replaces the optimizer, the quoting layer and the machine connection with one cloud service and adds a hosted cut-to-size store. If you need a full MRP/MES suite managing the whole plant, Ardis's broader module ecosystem may fit better; many businesses need the optimization and not the suite.

Is SmartCut an alternative to Magi-Cut?

Yes — SmartCut covers the same core job: optimized cutting layouts, diagrams, labels and beam saw files. The difference is delivery: SmartCut runs in the cloud with a REST API and online quoting, where Magi-Cut is installed Windows software. Our published benchmarks compare the two engines on identical real jobs — SmartCut Max matches or beats Magi-Cut on all 9 published benchmarks.

Can we run SmartCut alongside our current optimizer?

That is exactly how we suggest evaluating it: send the same cutting lists to both tools and compare stock counts, waste and time. A test environment is available on request. Parts import from spreadsheets/CSV and the API, so no data migration is needed to trial it.

We cut on Homag saws with Cut-Rite — does SmartCut work for us?

Yes. SmartCut exports PTX files compatible with Magi-Cut, Cut-Rite and directly with many Homag saws, so the layouts load into the workflow you already run — or straight into the saw.

Is SmartCut an alternative to the optimiser bundled with my saw?

Often, yes — SmartCut Max has been benchmarked head-to-head against Biesse OptiPlanner on 2,000+ real production jobs, saving 100+ stock, and exports the same native machine formats. See the benchmarks page for the methodology.
